He’s got the scars to prove it

Don’t you just love those surprise encounters you hadn’t expected when you rose wearily from your sleep?  I do….and yesterday I experienced one of those.

Going about the exciting business of car shopping, I met a man who was not afraid to speak of his life. “Hannes” was a large man!! The kind you see in the WWW ring, full of tattoos, long wild hair and massive arms and neck.

He was Afrikaans speaking and surely raised on a farm where he consumed many steaks and starches, building this mountain of a man! Despite his XXXL form, Hannes had a gentle and cheery demeanour as he shared his story in broken English.

At the age of 26 whilst riding his motorbike, he was hit side-on by a renegade taxi  driver who had ignored a red light. Hannes said the taxi dragged him for  40 meters, leaving him sprawled in the road with a broken neck, back, ribs, leg and arm, amongst other internal injuries.  The taxi driver fled, never to be seen again.

As Hannes lay in a coma, he said he could hear doctors telling his family to prepare for the worst as they didn’t believe he would survive the extensive injuries.  He shared with me that as he lay there he turned his attention to God whom he had ignored up to that time. He asked God to heal him, promising that he would testify of his healing for the rest of his life should he recover. Here was this 43 year old strapping  man, quietly but  unashamedly  telling an absolute stranger of the grace on his life.

I even have the scars to prove it” he proudly told me. He didn’t have to show me the scars….I believed him. What struck me about this ‘gentle giant’ was his boldness in sharing his heart and what God had done for him. It reignited in me a desire to share the incredible things  God has done in my life. Like Hannes accurately said….”people may not believe what’s written in the Bible but they cant argue with my scars.”

What about you?

  • Has God touched you in some way that has significantly changed your life
  • Do you ponder on and give thanks for your life, good times and bad?
  • As we approach Easter do you really know The One who was scarred and died on your behalf?
  • Do you have  the courage to share it with someone else?
I don’t understand why some  don’t recover from injuries or have to suffer with illness, mental or physical, why some “nasty” people live to old age and young children die.  But I put my trust  and faith in The One who “has the scars” to prove He gave his life for me.
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” – Philippians 3:18

    • Hey Carley,
I’m so thrilled you enjoyed the story. I love sharing them and kowing what a difference our relationship with Christ can have on our lives.

Blessings to you as we remember what He’s done for us at this special time of the year.

      Ray

  1. Thanks Ray. Loved this story. Hope all us well with you and Sue. Keith and I are doing good…thank The Lord! Just finished reading a chapter in a book I am reading by David Jeremiah. The book is titled God Loves You. We are doing this book in our home as a weekly Bible study. This week, appropriatlely so being Holy Week, the chapter for our lesson is God Wrote His Love In Red! Isn’t His timing awesome….love to you and Sue.

    • Thanks for reading and for your comments Alma. Sounds like a great book you are going through. I have read some awesome books lately and are convinced again of our need to really KNOW God so we can share Him with others. Yes I love this time of the year and am so aware of His sacrifice for us all, no matter who we are and what we have done….Amazing grace!! Love to you and your family

  2. A wonderful reminder of how we should be reaching out to others on a daily basis :)Thank you for sharing this wonderful story :)

    • yep I agree Nicholas….as we reflect on them it gives us courage to share these great things with others too so they may hear of His goodness too.

      Bless you brother

    • Thanks so much for your comment Kath………I agree……I recently discovered many of the prayers of Jews still today are more about thanksgiving than asking God for things :-) A very blessed Easter to you too as we recall the amazing sacrifice He made for us all.

  3. That’s a great story!! It’s a great reminder that we need to share our story with others,..because you just never know if they need Christ in their life. Love remembering Jesus during Easter.

    • Thanks Tans…..yep we dont know where a person is at until we show that we care……..we need to be bolder and not be ashamed of the good news of Christ
:-) It could be just what that person needs in the season they are in. Yes…this is such an important time for us as Christ-followers as we recall what He did on our behalf…will be watching “The Passion” sometime soon again. Love you special daughter
